Rafting the
rivers of Croatia is a wonderful way to experience the unspoiled
Croatian interior. Along the coast, the rivers are flanked by green
banks and karstic canyons. Lush forests and mountains border the
interior rivers. The grade of difficulty for most rivers is 3 but
rises to grade 4 on the Dobra and Una rivers. Following are some
of Croatia's best rafting rivers:
Kupa River
Flowing between the forested slopes and valleys of Risnjak
National Park, the Kupa has enough waterflow only in spring and
after heavy rainfalls. It can be accessed through Karlovac.
Dobra River
Also converging on Karlovac,
this is a great rafting destinations all year round.
Mreznica River
Another one of Karlovac's
"four rivers", this river is known for its waterfalls,
separated by stretches of calm water. The upper river is good for
canyoning.
Korana River
From Plitvice Lakes
National Park, this is another great river to
raft in early spring and after heavy rains.
Una River
Forming the border between Croatia and Bosnia, this river
is an exciting rafting experience downstream of the Strbacki buk waterfall,
especially when water levels are high.
Zrmanja River
Scenically gorgeous, this river is best rafted in the spring
and kayaked in the summer.
Krka River
In the upper part of the Krka
National Park, rafting this river takes you through the loveliest
and most unspoiled scenery of the park.
Cetina River
The banks of this river are dense with vegetation and the
cliffs, waterfalls and caves along the way make it scenically unforgettable.
