Cybercafes
The easiest way to get
online in Croatia is usually at a cybercafe. There are about a dozen
in Zagreb, a half-dozen in
Dubrovnik
and at least one in every town along the coast and the major city
of every island. The vast majority of them have high-speed connections
and the cost is usually about 20HRK per hour. For the most part, they
are prepared to print out your documents as well as to upload your
digital photos and burn them onto a CD. The young staff most likely
speak English and hours are long--especially in the summer.
Hotels
All five-star and most four-star hotels
in Croatia have internet access in some form, usually in a business
centre with a high-speed connection. You do not necessarily need to
stay in the hotel to use the internet. Naturally, you do need to pay
for it at about the same rate as the local cybercafe. Otherwise, you
may be able to configure your modem to work from your hotel room.
Connecting through your laptop
First you'll need an Internet
Service Provider. Major international providers such as AOL
do not have a node in Croatia. The two local providers
are T-com and VIP.
In order to set up a local account
from T-com, set your modem to dial 077200000. When
prompted, enter "gost" as the user and password. The bill
goes to the telephone you're using and it costs 40HRK per hour. Call
the T-com customer service number at 0800-9000 if you have a problem.
Yes, they speak English.
Wireless Access
Cheeky Rijeka
is the only town to offer free wireless access from its main street,
Korzo. Otherwise there are few free hotspots. You can get a paying
connection from any ACI
marina as well as most four and five-star hotels.
