I love the five-star Hotel Excelsior in Dubrovnik because I leave in much better shape than when I arrived. The Excelsior is designed for pampering and toning in the lap of luxury. In addition to the usual five-star amenities--indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sauna, gym--the Excelsior Hotel has a full menu of massages, beauty treatments and de-stressing programs. See the Hotel Excelsior on a map (#26). An extensive renovation currently underway includes the installation of a state-of-the-art spa and fitness centre ready in spring 2008.

It's also good to know that you can dine to you heart's content on excellent food in the hotel restaurant, the Taverna Rustica, and then work off your cellulite in the Wellness Centre.

Dubrovnik's prices have you worried? Try your luck in the Hotel Excelsior's elegant casino!

Located in the Ploce neighbourhood, only a short walk from the Dubrovnik city centre, the Hotel Excelsior is an excellent choice for business travellers as it harbours plenty of meeting and conference facilities. Families will appreciate the Children's Pool and special "Family Weekend in Dubrovnik" packages.

Rooms at the Excelsior Hotel contain all necessary luxuries such as bathrobes, slippers,Luxury room at the Hotel Excelsior hair dryers and electricity converters, plus (a nice touch) original paintings by local artists. Sipping a drink on your own private balcony overlooking the sea is the way to unwind after an arduous day of sightseeing. Check out the view from the Hotel Excelsior terrace.

To really treat yourself, try one of their special "City Break" packages that includes an airport transfer, tickets to the city museums and other goodies.

What Others Say

Press reviews of the Hotel Excelsior

In 1972 when the 160-room Hotel Excelsior expanded along this rocky stretch of coastline, it preserved this small building and turned it into a romantic dinner venue. Dining at the Taverna [Rustica] is very like eating in a small gostionica in rural Croatia. The decor is plain and the simple terrace is roofed with rushes. A lone guitarist plays and executive chef Steven Pieters adds a touch of glamour by lighting flares to guide you along the path from the Excelsior. But nothing is allowed to distract from the only two things that matter " the food and the view. Seafood is a speciality, including oysters from Peljesac and lobster and mussels from Ston. The Independent Oct. 1 2005.

We like The fantastic views of the Old Town, with its fortress walls and tiled roofs; and the "sun-bathing jetty", which acts as a private beach, albeit a stony one.

Not so keen Some of the décor, such as the heavy wood furnishing and strange colour combinations, still feels a little dated - lilac furnishings are not for everyone. The indoor pool and breakfast room are also a little gloomy. The Telegraph July 16 2007
