Authenticity and an immersive cultural experience are the watchwords of Ante Batarelo, a scholar and tour guide based in Split. Born in Sydney, Australia of Croatian parents, Ante returned to his roots in 1991, obtaining his BA in the University of Zagreb. After moving to Split in 1999, Ante became fascinated with the incredibly rich history of Split and the surrounding region. "I love history and I love working with people, so becoming a guide was a natural choice for me", says Ante.

I asked Ante what specific tours he handles. "I work with groups large or small as well as individuals and families. An in-depth walking tour of Diocletian's Palace is one of my most popular tours but I also get a lot of requests for Jewish heritage tours. Split has the third oldest synagogue in Europe! Trogir is also an amazing place that we often visit on a half-day tour. I'm a driver-guide so we're not confined to Split. I love taking people to the hinterlands for wine or olive-oil tasting and even out to the islands. One of my favorite excursions is a day trip up to Mostar in Bosnia. It's only a few hours drive away but the culture is completely different."

Very often, there's much more to see in Croatia than time to see it! Hiring a knowledgeable local expert can be the most efficient way to see the most in a short time. No more hassling with maps and GPS! Ante can whisk you to your point of interest quickly and suggest the best times and places to avoid being swamped by tourists. You can get off the beaten track to find the hidden places that don't appear in guidebooks.

Experiencing Croatia with Ante can bring a level of knowledge to your holiday that is impossible to replicate in a guidebook. Plus, he can tailor your sightseeing to concentrate on your interests. Whether it's food, shopping, nature parks, wine, art or architecture, Ante is ready to give you the inside secrets to help you get the most out of your stay. With a genial, outgoing personality and loads of experience handling visitors such as Rick Steves, Christiane Amanpour and Shimon Peres, Ante is ready to make your stay memorable.
