Watch out for bus, ferry and train schedules which usually change on national holidays. Traffic can also be heavier especially to and from the coast as Zagreb residents start and end a long weekend.
There is usually a grocery store or two open on the morning of a national holiday, even in the smallest town. Coastal towns depending on tourism are likely to have the most stores and businesses open but in small, out-of-the-way places the silence can be deafening.
