Sucuraj is on the eastern tip of Hvar Island, about 77km from Hvar Town. Most people come to Sucuraj on the car ferry from Drvenik and leave it quickly. It's true that Sucuraj village lacks the amazing architecture of Hvar Town or the beaches of Jelsa but it's certainly a peaceful and attractive place to visit and even spend the night. Plus, there are some beaches and inlets, not far from town.

Sucuraj was first settled around the 15th century but little remains from that period. The Augustinian monks arrived in 1573 and built a monastery, only part of which remains. Venetians arrived in 1631 and built a fortress and the baroque Church of St Anthony.

The tiny population of Sucuraj (less than 500) supports itself by fishing, farming and viticulture, now augmented by various tourist services.

Getting to Sucuraj

Sucuraj is a major entry point for Hvar Island. Jadrolinija runs several ferries a day between Drvenik, on the mainland, and Sucuraj. See the Drvenik-Sucuraj ferry schedule.

Buses meet many ferries to make the trip to Hvar Town, Jelsa and Stari Grad. The road to Sucuraj from Hvar Town takes you past a bucolic panorama of hills and fields but the two-lane road is poorly maintained so it's slow going.
