New Year's Eve in Dubrovnik
Cold, cold and more cold characterize Croatia's typical January weather, especially in the interior. Zagreb may very well be covered in snow which makes it a good time to head to the ski slopes just out of town. Snow along the coast or on the islands would be a rare event indeed but it's not exactly swimsuit weather either. Even if a dip in the sea would be more than bracing, the chilly air is conducive to outdoor activities like hiking or cycling. The chance of rain on the coast runs about 50% so plan on some museum visits as well. (See Croatia temperature and precipitation charts)

New Years Day is a bank holiday. Ferries and trains are on a holiday schedule--if there's one running.
January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany is often marked by a special Catholic mass.
New Years Eve is of course the event of the month and the best place to celebrate it is on Stradun in Dubrovnik. Read more about New Years Eve in Dubrovnik.
