Central Dalmatia is one of the most enticing parts of Croatia and one of the easiest to explore. Base yourself in Split and you can easily make day trips everywhere on the map to the left. The region is also easily accessible from Zagreb with trains and buses regularly leaving for Split and the neighbouring towns.

There's a strong whiff of the region's Roman heritage visible in the ruins of Solin, just outside Split, and in Diocletian's Palace in Split (a Unesco World Heritage site). Visit another World Heritage site in Trogir for a wealth of medieval architecture and sculpture and yet another in Sibenik for the remarkable Cathedral of St James.

And beaches? An hour's drive south of Split takes you to Brela and its stunning string of pine-shaded coves. Zlatni Rat in Brac Island has plenty of room for everyone; relatively untouristed Vis Island is dotted with secluded coves. And Bacvice in Split is not bad for an urban beach.

The beauty of the Mediterranean flourishes in central Dalmatia. From Murter you may find tours to take you out to the Kornati Islands National Park. Biokovo mountain behind Makarska is a favorite with hikers and trekkers. And, by all means, try to plan a visit to Krka National Park for its lakes and waterfalls.

Other worthwhile destinations in central Dalmatia include the Sibenik archipelago, Kastela, Primosten, Vodice and Omis.
