With its long coastline, there is no shortage of wonderful campsites in Istria. Most are outfitted with children's playgrounds and plenty of activities to keep old and young occupied. If you don't have a tent or mobile home, no problem! Many of the camping grounds below rent out bungalows. Some (not all) require you to bring your own sheets or towels though, so be prepared.

Sporty types will love this campsite. Spread over 197 acres and holding up to 9000 people, there's a full range of water sports (including scuba diving), a large swimming pool plus two smaller ones for kids, tennis, horseback riding, outdoor music and a massage parlor plus wine trails, bike trails and olive trails. Sirena Mobile Homes, Novigrad
These three-star mobile homes are a cut above, even offering flat-screen TV in very well-outfitted quarters. It's near the sea and the complex offers a wellness centre. ONLINE BOOKING

Bijela Uvala, Porec
For active holidays, it would be hard to beat this campsite that stretches over 111 acres and holds up to 6000 happy campers. You can eat well in the four restaurants and then work it all off bicycling, riding, playing tennis, mini golf, beach volley and more. There are two swimming pools, a children's playground and boating facilities. You can swim in a pristine sea from a developed beach. One of Croatia's top campsites.

Camping Stoja, Pula
This campsite is on one of the rare white sand beaches in Istria and is only 3km from the centre of Pula with regular bus service. Linens and wifi are free. ONLINE BOOKING

Polaris, Rovinj
This all-purpose family camping resort covers 148 acres and holds up to 4900 people. There's a swimming pool but also a long, pebbly beach on a magnificent sheltered cove. You can rent a boat or bike to explore the surroundings or head into Rovinj. Evening activities include a Sangria night, Beer Party, Cocktail night and there's usually live music. One of Croatia's top campsites.

Stella Maris, Savudrija
This campsite is smallish, covering only 12 acres and sheltering up to 1725 people. In addition to the usual sports involving balls, wind or water, there's horseback riding, a place to practice your golf swing and a flying centre for light aircraft. Naturally there are swimming pools and a rocky beach. You can come by boat as there's mooring space. One of Croatia's top campsites.

Park Umag Umag
Holder of the most "best campsite" titles, more this site covers 320 acres along the stony coast and holds up to 5100 people. You can rent a tent, caravan or mobile home to enjoy nearly any sport you could name including tennis, badminton, scuba diving, windsurfing, water-skiing and you can rent anything with wheels or that runs on petrol. There's a whirlwind of daytime and evening activities for kids, teenagers and adults with playgrounds, parks, swimming pools and dances. One of Croatia's top campsites. You can rent a bungalow here. Finida, Umag
Here is a much quieter experience on a site that covers only 8 acres and holding a maximum of 800 people. You can lounge on the pebbly beach or take a seaside walk to Umag. There are bicycles for rent and various games available to keep you amused but the pace is decidedly relaxed. One of Croatia's top campsites.
